The Romanian Pneumology Society (SRP) is involved in more and more digital initiatives fighting lung diseases like COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease) or lung cancer.
World COPD Day celebrated by the Romanian Pneumology Society
On the 18th of November 2015 , World COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease) Day was celebrated under the motto “It’s not to late”. In this context and because it’s never too late for a spirometry, the Romanian Pneumology Society (SRP) organised the 7th edition of the campaign “Do you know how old are your lungs?”
On the 21st-22nd of November, Bucharest citizens have been invited by SRP, for a free spirometry in a tent located at the entrance of one of the bigest parks in the city. On this ocasion a number of 886 free tests were performed and a number of 264 pacients have been diagnosed with COPD.

As a part of this campaign Prof.dr.Florin Mihaltan, president of SRP, invited all the romanians who are smoking, coughing and having little effort capacity to read about COPD on the dedicated website www.desprebpoc.ro. There anyone can find infos and solutions.
The #respirasanatate Campaign
In December 2015, together with the Federation of Cancer Pacients Associations (FABC), SRP started a new edition of another campaign: #respirasanatate (Breath Health) aiming to increase public awarness about the risk of lung cancer. Daily, the romanians are smoking over 5 milion cigarettes packs and about 85% pacients with lung cancer are smokers. Over 4 milion romanians have high risk of lung cancer.
On the 4th of December, during a press conference organised to launch the campaign, Prof.Dr.Florin Mihaltan, president of the Romanian Society of Pneumology (SRP) stated: “we need to increase the level of access to bronchoscopy for every pacient with a suspicion of lung cancer and a law to control tabagism is the best way to reduce the incidence of this killing disease”.
This edition of the campaign includes 3 new elements. Two of them are digital:
1. A Risk Calculator on www.invingemcancerul.ro where anyone can find the risk factors and the symptoms of lung cancer.
2. A smartphone application -iCoach App- helping anyone to quit smoking. A link for downloading the application (part of an European Comission campaign) can be found on www.invingemcancerul.ro
The third was a partnership with Băneasa Trail Run – a competition held on the 13th of December 2015 with more than 1000 runners supporting a healthy way of living.
The digital initiatives of the Romanian Pneumology Society will continue this year.
